Mikuni Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar – Roseville

If it’s your birthday, you can spin the wheel of Mikuni fortune here! And just our luck, it’s Ted’s birthday. We were hoping to win the bag of rice, everyone can use a bag of rice.

But first, a few nibbles.

Mikuni - agedashi tofu Mikuni - I don't remember

It’s good to try another restaurant’s agedashi tofu, because we’re so used to our favorite in Santa Barbara and forget that there may be other variations. This one appeared to be tempura battered and fried. I still prefer my source in SB, because the tofu is fried directly. Tempura’s a cop out! But really, Mikuni’s is fine obviously, considering how busy the place is.
This second item is also off the appetizer menu, takoyaki, a deep fried ball of octopus and batter.

Mikuni - kama

Our third appetizer was a fish collar. Again, it’s nice to try another place’s version of it. Kama’s always good.

Then, it’s time to spin the Wheel! Of! Fish! Just kidding. It’s the birthday wheel. So what’s it going to be for the birthday boy?

Well, okay, it wasn’t a bag of rice. But a bag of candy‘s not bad either. Happy birthday!

Omakase!

omakase 1 omakase 2 omakase 3
omakase 4 omakase 5 omakase 6
omakase 7 omakase 8
shiitake nigiri omakase 9
Omakase 1: Uni shooter with additional salmon roe and finely diced tomato.
Omakase 2: Maguro with mountain yam and wasabi. I normally do not care for the slimy texture of the mountain yam, but tonight I concentrated on flavor and it had the flavor of bacon. So, mountain yam, you win this time.
Omakase 3: Sake. I know it sounds weird to list sake as part of omakase, but it was the chef’s choice.
Omakase 4: Maguro, salad and uni with a curry cream sauce.
Omakase 5: Tai snapper with barley and miso. Very good!
Omakase 6: Halibut in a mango sauce, with fine slices of tomato and onion.
Omakase 7: Hamachi kama and tofu in soy sauce. The waitress said it was “mitsuki style” although I cannot find a reference for that online. Still, VERY good.
Omakase 8: Selection of nigiri. Aji, tai, hamachi belly and marinated maguro.
Intermission! A new favorite is shiitake nigiri, so a couple pieces of that were ordered to make us happy.
Omakase 9: Four frozen desserts. Green tea mochi, frozen honey-glaszed strawberry stuffed with ice cream, green tea powdered chocolate, and chocolate covered ice cream.
