Well smack me with a challah and call me lucky. It just so happened that I was staying with a friend who has a sweet next door neighbor called Say It With Flour. Sure, the baker thought I was visiting from another country when she found out I didn’t know what a Black and White [...] It was my last night of the New York and Hoboken trip, and for the first time, I duplicated a restaurant. I may have just eaten a good portion of curry, but walking towards the subway there was Gray’s Papaya. I’d walked by the place, or one of its many fruity imitators a number of times [...] I’ve only visited New York twice, with about four years inbetween. Yet both times I somehow ended up at this cafe. Both times I was with someone who wanted a cannoli. And afterwards, both friends said, “meh.” But that’s not Caffe Roma’s fault. That’s just a difference of expectations. I like Caffe Roma because their [...] One can hardly use the movie Dude, Where’s My Car as an accurate historical reference, but the fact that the characters banish their nemesis to Hoboken still instills the impression that this city is not a pleasant place, shibbies or not. So imagine my surprise when I arrive in the wee hours of the morning [...] Passing through Little Italy, and wasn’t in the mood to eat at a place heaving with people. This seemed as good as any. The prix fixe lunch was $12.95, I got a penne with mozz, basil and eggplant to start. Moved onto the basa, a white fish in white wine sauce, and vegetables. It was the mini-omakase that first caught my eye, but once I was seated, my dining companion and I opted for the regular omakase. However…I’m confused as to why it’s called omakase.
