I’ve been making preserved lemons since my trip to Morocco around 2002, for studies. Every market sold piles of them. They were used in a number of recipes but primarily for the chicken tajine with lemons and olives. I used to make that dish a lot more often, too, in the early 2000′s, when I [...] February 28th, 2011 | Tags: lemon, lemons, preserved lemons, tajine | Category: Eating In, Moroccan food, Santa Barbara | Leave a comment
Sandrine and I have been trying to catch up with each other more often. It’s been getting harder with changes in jobs, and her having kids. December and January were also bad due to recurring illnesses, we were both disappointed that she had to miss the Edible conference in late January from being sick or [...] February 20th, 2011 | Tags: bread, breakfast, granola, sandrine | Category: American food, Eating In, Santa Barbara | Leave a comment
I went to Kobachi on a whim. It was cold and raining, it felt like the right thing to do. Wayne for up for the task of dining with me and we got a 2-top before the place got too busy. And actually, we stayed until the crowd had died down for the night. This week I had the opportunity to do part of my day job – the work that makes the money so I can spend it on food – outside of the office, for this national campaign for “Telework Week.” It did allow me to have lunch in parts of town I normally couldn’t get to [...] February 18th, 2011 | Tags: meatballs, pizza | Category: American food, Eating Out, Italian food, Santa Barbara | Leave a comment
Where have I been during the deep fried turkey fad? About five or six years ago it seemed that everyone was trying to make deep fried turkey for their holiday meal. Not just because I heard about it awesome turkey, but because of all the reported accidents involving an enormous pot of boiling oil and [...] February 15th, 2011 | Tags: fried, turkey | Category: American food, Eating In, Santa Barbara | Leave a comment

Macs version of fried chicken, using chicken strips, seasoned and spicy, fried perfectly. With a side of chips and some ranch dipping sauce. It descended onto the table as if from heaven. Not southern fried bone-in chicken, imho, but quite good! Past words. Here’s the Scoop is an ice cream parlor that not only serves up the best variety of gourmet flavored ice cream and sorbet in town, made in-house, but they source all their fruit flavors seasonally from our local farmers markets. Last weekend I’d had their incredible cherimoya sorbet and the mixed berry Buttonwood merlot at [...] February 13th, 2011 | Tags: brownie, dessert, gelato, hot fudge sundae, ice cream, local source, sorbet, valentine | Category: American food, Eating Out, Santa Barbara | Leave a comment
Santa Barbara is hardly the cutting edge of food trends, we gladly take the spillover several years down the line. Food trucks are one of those trends I’ve been waiting for. In my impatience, I’ve gone to LA to explore them (and failed, thank you over-capacity food truck fest), and to Portland (big big big [...] February 13th, 2011 | Tags: bratwurst, curry, food truck, roti, sri lankan food, street food, trucks, wheelhouse | Category: Eating Out | 3 comments
This is now my third time coming here in the last seven days. Both my parents and I are now fans, and they suggested coming here for dinner. It was our first time here during dinner and I can tell you, it makes a big difference if you eat here when there are few tables [...] February 12th, 2011 | Tags: fried rice, green curry, noisy as hell, pad thai | Category: Eating Out, Santa Barbara, Thai food | One comment
