Ramen night was inspired by dinner at the Dutch Gardens, namely the Eisbein dish because it came with a large ham bone in the center. That made Ted want to make soup stock, for ramen. And thus it began. I have no record of the stock making process, as that took place at Ted’s home, [...] Our intent this final morning in San Diego was to go to the original Pancake House. Alas, Sunday morning potterings, the explosion of people in town for Comic Con, and a stubbornness about lines meant I didn’t have the patience to wait 40 minutes for a table. We went to the Studio Diner instead, a [...] This is another hangout from ye olde college days. My mates and I started coming here for the alternative scene, lattes and gelato after spending evenings in the Mission Bay area. It made us feel uber cool. There’s still a good vibe around the cafe tables, and it’s just down the block from el Indio. [...] Absolutely nothing fancy, that’s not el Indio’s intent, but a fun experience. I feel lucky if I get there and the line is only to the door, not out the door. I came here in the early 90s, and I usually pop by when visiting from out of town.
